There’s some debate over whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza. I’m not sure why, because I can’t think of anything that wouldn’t be good on top of a cheesy pie! But I guess not everyone likes everything, so arguments will ensue. As for me, I love a good Hawaiian pizza, which includes that delicious fruit, along with some ham and, on occasion, jalapeño peppers. The ham would be vegan of course . . .

I’m also a fan of a good grilled cheese sandwich. That got me thinking: what if I combined this gooey sammie with that tasty pizza? Sounds pretty good, right? So I went ahead and did it. This Hawaiian Pizza Grilled Cheese is a whole lot of indulgence stacked—and melted—between two pieces of bread.

What’s In It?

grilled cheese ingredients

This sandwich is filled with all kinds of amazing flavors. You have your sweet from the pineapple, your spicy from the jalapeños, your savory in the form of the vegan ham, and it’s all topped off with a fresh tomato and a little bit of Chinese five spice powder for some extra zing. Only a handful of ingredients but it delivers a mountain of taste.

I think you’re really going to love this one. It’s one of my favorite sandwiches right now and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Hawaiian Pizza Grilled Cheese

Bring sweet and spicy together with scrumptiousness in this new spin on an old classic. The Pineapple Pizza Grilled Cheese is a comfort food home run that you'll want to keep at the top of your lunchtime recipe rotation.
Prep Time10 minutes mins
Cook Time8 minutes mins
Course: lunch, dinner
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Hawaiian pizza, grilled cheese, jalapeño pepper, pineapple, vegan ham, sandwich, lunch, dinner
Yield: 2 sandwiches
Calories: 450kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 jalapeño pepper seeded and sliced
  • 1 cup pineapple chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five spice
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp. vegan butter
  • 4 thick slices of bread
  • 6 slices vegan ham I used this one from Tofurky
  • 1/2 cup vegan mozarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup vegan cheddar cheese
  • 4 tomato slices

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • When the oven is ready, place the jalapeño and pineapple pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then bake for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the tray and place the jalapeño and pineapple into a food processor or blender, along with the Chinese five spice and salt. Pulse until everything is well chopped, almost into a sort of relish. Set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over low-medium heat. As it heats, butter one side of each of the four slices of bread. Add the oil to the pan and allow it to heat up. When it's ready, place two slices of bread in the pan, buttered sides down. Top each one with three slices of vegan ham, 1/4 cup of both cheeses, two spoonfuls of the jalapeño/pineapple relish and two tomato slices. Then add the remaining two slices of bread to the tops—buttered sides up—and cook until the bread is toasted, about 4 minutes. Then flip the sandwiches and repeat on the other side, or until the cheese has started to melt. Serve immediately.

Hi there! 👋 It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted. Turns out training for a marathon takes just about all of your effort. Who knew? But I’m back now with what I hope will be the first of consistent weekly recipes (at least until the next marathon 😂).

This one is for Baked Tofu and Baby Bok Choy. It’s SUPER simple and takes very little effort. Plus it’s totally versatile too; you can serve it with rice, with noodles, or even in a soup—whatever you’re feeling on the day.

I used @nasoya’s extra firm tofu here because it’s non-GMO Project verified, USDA organic, cholesterol-free, gluten-free, and preservative-free. All the things I look for when buying products these days.

I’m so happy to be back sharing recipes and can’t wait to pit a few more out there in the upcoming weeks!

Yes it’s 60 degrees in New Jersey in December 😬. But that’s still comfort food weather to me, and nothing fits the bill better than this Beefless Beef Stew with @gardein Beefless Tips—a long-time reader favorite on the NFV website. It’s hearty and totally delicious. Grab the recipe link in my profile and enjoy!
We have a wonderful ramen restaurant here in our t We have a wonderful ramen restaurant here in our town of Montclair. They offer a vegan version they is out of this world. But whenever we order from them Laura and I are equally, of not more, excited about the edamame they serve: it’s tossed in chili oil and charred. So amazing. Of course I had to take a shot at recreating it for the site and this Chili-Charred Edamame recipe was born. It’s great as either an appetizer or a snack! Check out the recipe at the link in my profile.
